Pompeian Group and DCOOP Group of Spain Announce Expansion of Partnership to Strengthen Leadership Position in World Olive Oil Market
BALTIMORE, MD, October 30, 2017 – Pompeian Group, the Baltimore-based top importer and manufacturer of olive oil in the United States, announced today that it has strengthened its alliance with DCOOP Group of Spain, the largest olive oil cooperative in the world, by signing a new agreement that increases the companies’ stakes in one another from 20% to 50%. This agreement will allow both companies to bolster their position in the United States, a market with a trend of increasing olive oil consumption that currently absorbs a volume of more than 300,000 tons per year.
Pompeian, through its various olive oil companies in the United States, and DCOOP, through its subsidiary Mercaóleo, made their first share exchange of 20% in November 2015, creating the global leader in olive oil. Pompeian, as the #1 selling olive oil in the market, brings to the alliance its commercial capacity in both bulk and packaging in different countries, including the United States, where it is the leader for bottled olive oil. As the largest producer in the world, DCOOP brings its strength in the quality production and efficient supply of olive oil.
Under this agreement, both groups share a 50% stake in Mercaoleo (which possesses two bottling plants in Antequera, Malaga), a 25% stake in Qorteba Internacional (the refinery and olive oil storage of Alcolea, Córdoba) and a 50% stake in the Pompeian Group. DCOOP has made a significant investment into Pompeian’s U.S. operations, which include oil bottling plants on both the East and West coast and bulk oil trading operations.

The DCOOP Group of Spain is the world’s largest olive grower, made up of over 75,000 family farmers and ranchers. The cooperative produces more than 220,000 metric tons of olive oil per year through more than 50 million trees, and invoiced 1,001.4 million euros in 2017 while exporting 489 million euros to 60 countries. The DCOOP farmers produce a diverse crop of olives and engage in other products such as wine, table olives, goat’s milk, beef cattle, pork, cereals and almonds.

Number One Extra Virgin Olive Oil in America Invests $2 Million in New Facility as Latest Commitment to Quality
BALTIMORE, MD, September 26, 2017 – Pompeian, Inc., the maker of the number one selling extra virgin olive oil in America, opened the Pompeian Quality Control and Research & Development Center today, a best-in-class facility dedicated to ensuring the quality, purity and full traceability of Pompeian products. Coming on the heels of the creation and subsequent American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) accreditation of the Pompeian Sensory Panel, the center is the latest proof point in Pompeian’s ongoing commitment to quality and will serve as a hub for research and development.
The Pompeian Quality Control and Research & Development Center is fully equipped with a state of the art laboratory poised to perform quality and purity analysis on approximately 15,000 samples per year in accordance with International and National quality standards and certifications, including the Codex Alimentarius, International Olive Council (IOC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union (EU). In addition, the center houses Pompeian’s unique traceability software system, which allows for every oil batch to be traced to where each olive is grown and harvested. Architect Gil Even-Tsur, who specializes in making buildings with an emotional content, cultural depth and strong sense of interiority, designed the center. The facility also features:
- Specialized lighting system to allow for proper evaluation of color and all visual aspects of raw materials
- Sensory Preparation Room to store and prepare samples for sensorial evaluation by the Pompeian Sensory Panel
- Temperature and light controlled Olive Oil Shelf Life Research Room to mimic store shelf conditions
Pompeian’s specialized team of olive oil experts, food scientists, award winning and AOCS approved chemists, biologists, food engineers and highly qualified quality assurance technicians, led by Dr. Luisito Cercaci, Pompeian’s Vice President of Quality and Research & Development, will grow by 20% with the introduction of the center. In addition to Pompeian’s investment in its expansion, the team will also undergo continuous internal training to increase skills and capabilities at the new 4,500-square foot facility.
