Pompeian Group and DCOOP Group of Spain Announce Expansion of Partnership to Strengthen Leadership Position in World Olive Oil Market

BALTIMORE, MD, October 30, 2017 – Pompeian Group, the Baltimore-based top importer and manufacturer of olive oil in the United States, announced today that it has strengthened its alliance with DCOOP Group of Spain, the largest olive oil cooperative in the world, by signing a new agreement that increases the companies’ stakes in one another from 20% to 50%. This agreement will allow both companies to bolster their position in the United States, a market with a trend of increasing olive oil consumption that currently absorbs a volume of more than 300,000 tons per year.

Pompeian, through its various olive oil companies in the United States, and DCOOP, through its subsidiary Mercaóleo, made their first share exchange of 20% in November 2015, creating the global leader in olive oil. Pompeian, as the #1 selling olive oil in the market, brings to the alliance its commercial capacity in both bulk and packaging in different countries, including the United States, where it is the leader for bottled olive oil. As the largest producer in the world, DCOOP brings its strength in the quality production and efficient supply of olive oil.

Under this agreement, both groups share a 50% stake in Mercaoleo (which possesses two bottling plants in Antequera, Malaga), a 25% stake in Qorteba Internacional (the refinery and olive oil storage of Alcolea, Córdoba) and a 50% stake in the Pompeian Group. DCOOP has made a significant investment into Pompeian’s U.S. operations, which include oil bottling plants on both the East and West coast and bulk oil trading operations.

Pompeian is the leading importer and manufacturer of olive oil in the United States, importing 50,000 metric tons per year. In addition to being the #1 selling brand of olive oils in the U.S., the company produces a line of best-selling gourmet vinegars, cooking wines and cooking sprays. Baltimore based since 1906, Pompeian focuses intensely on creating the highest quality products at the best possible value and partners directly with farmers, such as DCOOP, to achieve full transparency and consistency in quality.

The DCOOP Group of Spain is the world’s largest olive grower, made up of over 75,000 family farmers and ranchers. The cooperative produces more than 220,000 metric tons of olive oil per year through more than 50 million trees, and invoiced 1,001.4 million euros in 2017 while exporting 489 million euros to 60 countries. The DCOOP farmers produce a diverse crop of olives and engage in other products such as wine, table olives, goat’s milk, beef cattle, pork, cereals and almonds.

“Pompeian and DCOOP is now a fully integrated sourcing model from tree to bottle, which will work to serve the United States consumer with a supply of safe and high quality olive oils,” said David Bensadoun, Chief Executive Officer of Pompeian Group. “The current levels of olive oil consumption in the United States are much lower than that of our European counterparts, but our now strengthened partnership strives to allow every American household to enjoy the innate health benefits and great taste of high quality extra virgin olive oil.”

DCOOP Group Chief Executive Officer Antonio Luque gave the following statement: “This partnership will strengthen our leadership in the world olive oil market and work to increase olive oil consumption with an absolute commitment towards a high quality product. This is a key step for our 75,000 families of farmers who, day after day, strive to produce the best olive oil in the world.”

The Pompeian Quality Control and Research & Development Center is fully equipped with a state of the art laboratory poised to perform quality and purity analysis on approximately 15,000 samples per year in accordance with International and National quality standards and certifications, including the Codex Alimentarius, International Olive Council (IOC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union (EU). In addition, the center houses Pompeian’s unique traceability software system, which allows for every oil batch to be traced to where each olive is grown and harvested. Architect Gil Even-Tsur, who specializes in making buildings with an emotional content, cultural depth and strong sense of interiority, designed the center. The facility also features:

  • Specialized lighting system to allow for proper evaluation of color and all visual aspects of raw materials

  • Temperature and light controlled Olive Oil Shelf Life Research Room to mimic store shelf conditions

Pompeian’s specialized team of olive oil experts, food scientists, award winning and AOCS approved chemists, biologists, food engineers and highly qualified quality assurance technicians, led by Dr. Luisito Cercaci, Pompeian’s Vice President of Quality and Research & Development, will grow by 20% with the introduction of the center. POMPEIAN, INC. INTRODUCES FOUR NEW USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC PRODUCTS

New Offerings Include Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray, Organic Red Wine Vinegar, Organic Balsamic Vinegar and Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

BALTIMORE, MD – (September 27, 2016) – With consumer demand for organic food on the rise and a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported trend of double digit growth in the organic sector, Pompeian is excited to introduce new Organic Vinegars and Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray. The new products join Pompeian Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the company's lineup of organic offerings that are bottled under evaluation and surveillance by Quality Assurance International (QAI), a USDA National Organic Program authorized certifying body that verifies adherence to program guidelines from sourcing, processing and storage to shipping. Pompeian's organic products are also certified Non-GMO by the Non-GMO Project Organization.

Naturally gluten free and non-allergenic, Pompeian Organic Vinegars are perfectly suited for vinaigrettes, marinades, dressings and sauces. Additionally, select varieties contain the mother, providing a wide variety of additional health benefits. The organic vinegars are available in three varieties, including: Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Organic Red Wine Vinegar and Organic Balsamic Vinegar.

Pompeian"s new Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray is a premium, full-bodied extra virgin olive oil, ideal for salads, pasta and drizzling. The olive oil uses olives that are grown under conditions that protect the environment as well as the fruit and its natural antioxidants. The spray offers triple action use – drip, stream or spray – that allows for flexibility in cooking and total portion control.

"At Pompeian, we know that our consumers are increasingly interested in the quality of their food and where it comes from, whether from tree to bottle or vine to bottle," said David Bensadoun, Chief Executive Officer. "Expanding our organic offerings and working with the USDA for certification is one of the many ways we work to provide products that satisfy this need."

Both Pompeian's Organic Red Wine Vinegar and Pompeian's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar contain the mother, which is the dark, cloudy substance formed from naturally occurring pectin and apple or grape residues found in organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized vinegars. Unlike other vinegars on shelf, unfiltered, unpasteurized organic vinegar with the mother can be consumed on its own as part of a daily diet as the mother contains healthy bacteria filled with a high volume of antioxidants. These antioxidants, called polyphenols, improve digestion, boost the immune system, combat cholesterol, prevent dandruff, soothe sore throats, keep skin healthy, and reduce excess fat in cells, promoting weight loss.

Pompeian Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray retails for $3.99-$4.99, Organic Red Wine & Apple Cider Vinegar retail for $2.99 and Organic Balsamic Vinegar retails for $3.99. For more information about Pompeian's new organic products, including where to buy and Pompeian's full product line, visit www.pompeian.com. And follow Pompeian on Facebook and Twitter.
